Walmart shooting in Southaven, Mississippi: 2 killed, police officer wounded

A massive police presence surrounded the store Tuesday morning.

The unnamed shooter opened fire on coworkers at the Walmart in Southaven, a city southeast of Memphis on the state line between Tennessee and MS, at 6.45am.

Police in Southaven, Mississippi, are investigating the incident on the 6800 block of Southcrest Parkway, near I-55 and Goodman Road. At this point, the suspect was engaged by another officer. He was suspended on Monday after pulling a knife on a customer.

Moore said about 60 employees were inside the store when the shooting occurred. Several people outside the store reported hearing a series of gunshots. The suspect - believed to be a former employee - and a city police officer were injured in an exchange of gunfire.

Employees were told they can not leave the scene.

A Southaven police officer and the alleged shooter - a former Walmart employee- were both injured.The officer was taken to Baptist Desoto Hospital while the employee was taken to the Regional Medical Center after he was shot twice. The station also reports that a police officer was wounded during the shooting.

An officer was reportedly hit by a bullet but protected by his vest.

One witness to the police response tweeted, "Something serious just happened at Southaven Wal-Mart". Numerous employees waited in a neighboring parking lot after the shooting. Pop pop pop pop - more than a dozen shots. "I saw at least one cop running in the store with a rifle". I just thought 'Run!' and ran to my vehicle.
