System-wide Dark Mode was a key feature of iOS 13 when it was announced by Apple in June. The technology giant is now bringing support for a dark mode on Outlook for Android and iOS. "It's an apt metaphor for why we love Dark Mode: human needs unfold across an equally broad spectrum".
"Whether you want to reduce eye strain, improve battery life, or it just has aesthetic appeal, Dark Mode exemplifies our ability to craft simple and powerful Microsoft 365 experiences that give you choice and flexibility", said Jon Friedman, head of Microsoft Office design. Eventually, Microsoft also plans to bring dark mode to the SharePoint, OneDrive, Planner, and Microsoft To-Do mobile apps, as well as OneDrive and Microsoft Planner on the web.
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on mobile are set to pick up their dark mode treatments alongside the launch of iOS 13 later this year. Until then, Outlook's Dark Mode automatically turns on for Android users when they enable Battery Saver. "These perks all hold true for Dark Mode on Office.com", officials noted. Microsoft points out that these dark modes are trickier than they seem - the company has to redesign its product in a way that emphasizes black and grey shades while remaining aesthetically pleasant and fully useable.
