Chennai: As many as 526 teeth of varying sizes were extracted from the right lower jaw of a seven-year-old boy in a five hour surgery carried out by doctors of a private dental college-cum-hospital recently.
Ravindran was originally brought to the hospital after complaining of pain and swelling in his lower jaw.
Doctors said it is a unique medical case and a first-of-its-kind.
Despite their success, surgeons said they had never encountered anything like this before.
Doctors said it took mere moments to get permission to perform surgery from his parents but their son Ravindranath required several hours of cajoling before giving in.

A case of compound composite odontoma was earlier recorded in Mumbai where dentists removed 232 teeth from the upper jaw of a 17-year-old boy in 2014. The teeth are said to have varied in size from 1-15 millimeters, resembling a tooth with a crown covered by enamel and a root-like structure. "The sack, weighing about 200 grams, was carefully removed and was later found to contain 526 teeth - small, medium and large".
"They looked like pearls in an oyster", Dr. Ramani told the Times of India.
"Under general anesthesia, we drilled into the jaw from the top", he said. An X-Ray and CT Scan revealed that a lot of small rudimentary tooth in the lower-right jaw.
The tiny white dots that can be seen in the bottom, left part of the X-ray of P Ravindran's jaw were all teeth.
The cause of the growth remains unclear, though doctors at the college have narrowed down the possibilities to genetics or even radiation from cellphone towers. Dentists said like many boys of his age, permanent teeth were erupting in Ravindranath.
