East coast of Florida waits for Hurricane Dorian's turn

Despite its downgrade, Hurricane Dorian is still risky and expected to remain so in the coming days, according to the National Hurricane Center. The hurricane center late Monday called the storm "stationary" after several hours of crawling at 1 mph.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Dorian's maximum sustained winds decreased Tuesday morning to near 110 miles per hour (175 kph).

Authorities in Florida ordered mandatory evacuations in some vulnerable coastal areas. The storm's strongest winds are usually close to the eye.

She said that the Atlantis is working with The Bahamas Red Cross and Chef José Andrés' World Central Kitchen "to provide much needed relief, including food and supplies to the residents of Abaco, Grand Bahama and others in the Bahamas who were affected".

Sands said the main hospital in Marsh Harbor in the Abaco islands was intact and sheltering 400 people but in need of food, water, medicine and surgical supplies.

On Tuesday, it was downgraded from a Category five storm to a Category three, but major risks of catastrophic winds and life-threatening floods have kept the island, its people, and indeed its animals on tenterhooks.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for areas north of Deerfield Beach, Florida, to Jupiter Inlet, Florida, and north of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, to Edisto Beach, South Carolina.

Other Central Florida sites were closing Tuesday altogether.

On Tuesday, Hurricane Dorian lost some of its punch but grew in size on Tuesday, picking up speed and forecast to come "dangerously close" to Florida's coast, Reuters reported.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency in his state on Monday, his office said, anticipating the southeast coast could be hit by the storm on Thursday.

Calgary-based WestJet has cancelled its flights to Fort Lauderdale "until it is safe to resume flying" and in the meantime is allowing anyone travelling to parts of Florida or Nassau to rebook without any added fees.

The governors of Georgia and SC had ordered evacuations of some coastal counties. Parts of those states were under mandatory evacuation.
