Denis Shapovalov has been eliminated from the Chengdu Open after Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta defeated the Canadian 6-3, 6-4 in semifinal action Saturday. The pair have met twice in their career, each winning once, with Shapovalov most recently defeating the No. 64-ranked Busta in the round of 64 at the Italian Open in May.
The Spaniard withstood 12 aces from the eighth seed to claim victory after 63 minutes, securing a single break in each set to snap a six-match losing streak in tour-level semi-finals. In his only previous meeting against Bublik at the 2016 VTB Kremlin Cup, the Spaniard also needed a final-set tie-break to claim the win. After saving two set points at 4-5, 15/40, with strong serving and attacking play, Bublik edged a tense first-set tie-break. "The surface is very fast, but I was very good with my serve during all the matches and I think it was the key to being the victor of the tournament".
