First vaping-related death reported in Alabama, health officials confirm

This drastic and sweeping prohibition against vaping products will have far-reaching economic consequences for many small businesses that make up the bulk of this new and burgeoning industry.

Symptoms of severe vaping-related lung illness include cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, fever and fatigue. Nationwide, as of September 24, there have been 805 cases of lung illness reported from 46 states and one USA territory. They suggest refraining from the use of e-cigarettes and vape products in an effort to avoid illness. There have been 13 deaths across 11 states. Right now, we know it's a man from East Alabama, but the state is looking at more than a dozen cases of illness.

About 69% of patients are male. The median age of cases is 23 years, with about 62 percent of patients between the ages of 18 and 34, according to the CDC. "The last 20 percent are between the ages of 20 and 39". In the CDC's national-level report, data about substances used in these products were self-reported by 514 patients. The CDC recommends on the basis of these reports that individuals should abstain from using e-cigarettes especially those that contain THC.

Three cases are identified as probable, which means a patient has a respiratory illness and vapes, but it hasn't been determined if the illness is linked to vaping.

CDC reported Friday that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) may play a major role in the outbreak of lung injuries linked to e-cigarettes and vaping.

New research looks at the lung injuries caused by vaping or e-cigarette use.

The abrupt action of MA resembles the witch hunts of that former colony's past.

The American Vaping Association has also come forth following the nationwide issue claiming the proposed ban will negatively affect several million American adults who have been using e-cigarettes to quit smoking. Such an action will surely cause many bankruptcies, as these legal businesses can no longer afford to pay rent or buy products made and/or sold by other US companies, pay salaries to employees, or pay taxes to MA and the federal government. Numerous states are considering similar action. There's no product or chemical that has been found in all cases, she said, although most cases involved THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana. It can't, however, confirm that only those patients who used THC fell ill.

A specific cause of the nationwide outbreak of lung injuries remains unknown, but health officials are zeroing in on potential clues.

The CDC also warns against buying vape products, such as THC, off the street and one should not modify or add substances to the products they are using.

"I breathe a little bit better".

"State investigations have pointed at the vaping of THC as the common denominator for weeks", she said.
