Raising awareness on World AIDS Day

December 1 has marked World AIDS Day since it was founded in 1988, just four years after the virus was identified.
This year's commemoration is the thirty-first edition since the world started remembering the day as part of efforts to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS and efforts to contain it.
"We asked people to know their status to help our country combat the disease and the spread of HIV, and there are free tests and advice given out to people", Hawa Aadan, a university student told Anadolu Agency.
UNAIDS reports that 32% of people in the Middle East and North Africa are accessing the treatment.
Of the almost 38 million people living with HIV worldwide - including 1.7 million children younger than 15 years old - just 24.5 million have access to treatment therapies, according to UNAIDS.
There are an estimated total of 7,271 British Columbians living with HIV.

In 2018, 25 per cent of new HIV infections were among men who have sex with men, a more than three-fold increase from seven per cent in 2010.
