The double honour is rare, and despite its hugeness as a recognition of talent, it is symbolic of much that is wrong with Hollywood's "Oscars So White" and so exclusionary of talent that doesn't tick all the boxes. Gerwig was arguably the biggest snub since her film earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress (Soairse Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Florence Pugh), Best Original Score, and Best Costume Design. Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman", Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" and Sam Mendes' "1917" followed close behind with 10 nods a piece.
Gerwig and other female directors were, however, placed in the category of the best directors.
To make matters worse, only five women total have been nominated in the Best Director category. The director Todd Phillips movie has already had a strong track record during the awards season. "I do", Lopez adds.

Only two of the acting nominees were not white: Cynthia Erivo for her lead role as anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman in Harriet and Spaniard Antonio Banderas for drama Pain and Glory.
The Darkish Knight was denied a Greatest Movie nomination, as he obtained Joker and Black Panther final yr.

This hasn't gone unrecognized by the masses as the hashtag #OscarSoWhite was trending on Twitter following Monday's announcement of the nominees. The Twitter account for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made a short list of things viewers should expect this year.
But can the Oscars inch away from predictability and consider awarding a film like Greta Gerwig's Little Women - a warm and generous post-Civil War romance - best picture? A closer look at these two categories, though, especially at the leading actress category, shows that the movies that made the cut are, well, not nominated in many other categories.
Adam Sandler shrugged off his omission for playing a compulsive NY jeweler, joking that he would no longer have to campaign for the acclaimed "Uncut Gems". Renee Zellweger for "Judy".
"Glad to see American Factory's Oscar nod for Best Documentary".
On this, Phoenix said that he feels honoured and humbled to have been nominated by his fellow actors.
"So thrilled", wrote Michelle Obama.
Some 9,000 Academy members vote for the Oscars. This year's Oscar Awards will be one of these awards.
