The resolution comes six days after Trump ordered the killing of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and two days after Iran responded to the assassination by targeting bases that host American forces in Iraq with ballistic missiles.
Top American military officials including Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper have said there were no plans for the U.S.to withdraw from Iraq.

Pompeo told reporters on January 10 that Soleimani was planning an imminent "large-scale attack against American interests" when he was killed.
"Those are completely consistent thoughts. The president has been very clear - we will continue to apply economic sanctions until Iran stops its terrorist activities and commits that it will never have nuclear weapons", Mnuchin said.
The new measures were announced in a White House press briefing by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. Pompeo was asked about this discrepancy and whether the Trump administration had told senators multiple embassies were targeted.
