The debate comes at a pivotal point in the campaign as moderate voters are struggling to unify, with some increasingly looking to Bloomberg to become the clear alternative to progressive Bernie Sanders.
Bloomberg formally entered the race in November, almost a year after most of the other candidates. Bloomberg's rise in national polls has been fueled nearly exclusively by an unprecedented national advertising campaign, carefully controlled campaign events and a sprawling national organization that has likely already cost him more than half a billion dollars.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachussetts, for instance, tweeted, "primary voters curious about how each candidate will take on Donald Trump can get a live demonstration of how we each take on an egomaniac billionaire". A nationwide poll of Democratic voters released Tuesday by National Public Radio, PBS NewsHour and Marist University showed Sanders increasing his support to 31 percent, a rise of nine points since the last poll in December.
Bloomberg, who was late to enter the Democratic presidential race, announced on Tuesday that he will join the debate in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Buttigieg also took aim at the former NY mayor on Tuesday when asked during a CNN town hall if he thought Bloomberg was trying to buy his way in.
With Bloomberg's political stock rising, a spokesman said that the candidate would sell Bloomberg LP, the global news giant that bears his name and made him a billionaire, if his presidential campaign is successful.
Some Democrats fear that the conditions are ripe for a bare-knuckles brawl on national television that could carve new scars into a divided Democratic Party that must ultimately come together this fall if it hopes to deny Trump a second term. Less than 24 hours earlier, a Quinnipiac poll showed Sanders with a healthy lead over Trump in a hypothetical match-up, 51% to 43%.
The stakes on Wednesday night are high for all the candidates, not just Bloomberg.
I stand by Mike Bloomberg because I believe he is the best candidate in the race - not ideal - but the best candidate to beat Donald Trump and I think we have to keep our eye on the prize in November.

"The fact is if the state of this race remains status quo - with [former Vice President Joe] Biden, [former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor] Pete [Buttigieg], and [Sen.] Amy [Klobuchar (D-Minn.)] in the race on Super Tuesday - Bernie is likely to open up a delegate lead that seems almost impossible to overcome", said Kevin Sheekey, Bloomberg's top strategist. "The opportunity to discuss his workable and achievable plans for the challenges facing this country is an important part of the campaign process". With 99 delegates at stake, Virginia is the fourth-largest prize on the Super Tuesday calendar, and Monmouth's is the first poll to have been taken there since the summer.
Klobuchar surged into the top tier of the race with a strong debate performance in New Hampshire.
To qualify, candidates must have garnered as least 12 percent support in two polls conducted in Nevada and/or SC or must have hit 10 percent in four polls conducted in those two states or in nationwide surveys between January 15 and February 18.
They have another six days to qualify for next week's debate.
Biden, who performed far below expectations in Iowa and New Hampshire, has focused efforts on rebounding in SC, which will hold its primary on February 29. Yet it's never been attempted by someone as wealthy as Bloomberg, who has already invested more than $400 million into a national advertising campaign and hired more than 2,000 campaign staffers.
Instead he is going all in on so-called Super Tuesday on March 3, when 14 states including heavily populated California and Texas vote on choosing a Democratic nominee.
More evidence of his momentum: he is coming under frequent attack from rivals, including Trump himself.
