Former Celtic defender Jackie McNamara ill in hospital

Former Scotland and Celtic star Jackie McNamara has been rushed to hospital after collapsing on his doorstep.

However, a close family friend Paul Larkin tweeted yesterday: "Jackie is now awake and talking".

He was most recently in charge of York City between 2015 and 2016, before stepping into a behind-the-scenes role until 2018.

The report quotes a friend of McNamara who says he was 'walking the dog on Saturday near his home in York.

Larsson is one of several former team-mates of McNamara who have been sending their best wishes since news of the former defender's serious illness emerged. "My thoughts are with his wife Samantha and the children".

McNamara managed Dundee United, Thistle and York following his retirement in 2011.

The Scotland national team, which capped McNamara 33 times, issued a statement saying: "The thoughts of everyone at the Scottish FA are with former Scotland player Jackie McNamara and his family".

He joined Celtic in 1995 and went on to play for the Bhoys for over a decade.

McNamara's former Celtic teammate John Hartson posted a message of support on social media, with several clubs and Scottish football personalities following suit.
