USA evacuates coronavirus cruise ship passengers

American passengers were to disembark the Diamond Princess and leave Japan on a government-chartered plane Sunday evening to Travis Air Force Base near Fairfield, Calif., according to an email sent to them Saturday by the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.

Pressure is growing on the British government to airlift citizens stranded on a cruise ship stricken by coronavirus, after a Chinese tourist in France became the first person to die from the disease in Europe. An 83-year-old American woman from it tested positive upon arriving in Malaysia, authorities there said.

Smith said he and his wife believe that they will be better off finishing their quarantine on the ship.

According to Japan's health minister, there are 355 confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection among the 1,219 individuals who have been tested, including 73 individuals who tested positive but are not showing symptoms.

The US move has not gone down well some on Twitter.

American passengers from a cruise ship docked in Japan on which about 400 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed will be flown to a pair of military bases in the United States, Department of Defense officials confirmed Sunday.

"Forty of them have gotten infected", Anthony Fauci, a senior official at the National Insitutes for Health said on CBS' Face the Nation show.

Those who are not infected are not required to board the U.S. chartered flight, but the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo has recommended that U.S. citizens get off the ship as soon as possible and take one of the chartered flights home.

The cruise ship arrived in Japan earlier this month with more than 3,700 passengers and crew members from more than 50 countries and regions.

American passengers were taken off the cruise liner on Sunday in preparation for boarding charter flights home. Japan's handling of the quarantine has drawn criticism in the USA, with some passengers calling on President Donald Trump to intervene. He said that some passengers have not seen the sun in several days. There also was concern about being on a long flight with other passengers who may be infected or in an incubation period.

The ship had over 3,700 people on board when it went into quarantine last week, after it was discovered that a man who disembarked in Hong Kong in January tested positive for the virus.

An on-board announcement late yesterday said Americans choosing to leave should get ready, tweets from passengers said.

Mr Morrison and cabinet are waiting for an Australian infectious disease expert's assessment of the situation on board the ship, The Australian reported. There are now 15 cases of people with the COVID-19 virus in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"I am pleased to report that everyone quarantined at CFB Trenton is healthy with no symptoms of novel coronavirus infections", Tam said.
