Florida, Massachusetts Announce 14-Day Quarantine for Louisiana Travelers

"We are going to be authorizing the use of checkpoints on the roads coming into Florida for the counties and the Florida Highway Patrol".

"The Miami Beach cases, they got it from spring break, kind of like New Orleans with Mardi Gras", said Robert Jenkins, president of the Florida State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police union.

The governor also expanded an emergency order on Friday mandating that anyone who travels from New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana to Florida self-isolate for 14 days.

There are more than 83,000 confirmed cases in the USA of the coronavirus, which has been blamed for more than 1000 deaths.

For the next 14 days, new vacation rentals will not be permitted.

Among the directives involved in the quarantine order are the establishment of "checkpoints on the roadways for those entering Florida and to require those persons to provide information, including in a written form, regarding the origin of their travel and on the address of their location of isolation or quarantine for a period of 14 days".

Despite criticism, DeSantis has refused to issue a statewide lockdown limiting residents' movements that states like California, New York and IL have done.

Still, people continue to visit the state after the order, and DeSantis said Friday that officials, working with the Florida National Guard, had screened more than 3,400 travelers from those areas, telling them they have to self-isolate. "We are taking extraordinary steps here to keep our residents safe, including asking folks to stay home and closing nonessential businesses".

The governor called out a Hialeah hospital for price gouging customers, charging $150 on tests that the federal government has said are free.

"If you think you're coming from one of the epicenters, we probably think you should follow the directions of your state and local officials, " he said. So the vacation rentals will be suspended for two weeks. Those already here can finish their trip, according to DeSantis, but are encouraged to go home as soon as possible. "And we appreciate the assistance of people".

DeSantis said he moved to add Louisiana to the list because of concerns for the panhandle.

DeSantis acknowledged that although the state's testing protocol is focused on people who are showing symptoms, are older, or who have likely been exposed to someone who is positive, it doesn't know how many people contract COVID-19 and don't show symptoms. "What they are doing is they're tying all these boats together and then having large group parties", DeSantis said".
